Cape Town's Climate
When to come, what to pack, and what each season actually feels like on the ground.
Cape Town has a Mediterranean climate — dry summers, wet winters, and four distinct seasons that are flipped from Europe's.
The recommended time to visit Cape Town is from October to March, when it's summer weather in South Africa, with long warm days, clear skies, and the famous southeast wind locals call the Cape Doctor. Spring and autumn are quieter and often the most pleasant months to visit.

However, it's important to remember that the latter half of December is a holiday and school vacation period in South Africa. All tourist attractions are booked well in advance, and in many cases, accommodation prices increase by tens of percent during this time. If you have a specific activity planned, check in advance if it's affected by seasonality. For example, the whale-watching season is from August to November.

When it rains in Cape Town
Cape Town is an ideal place for outdoor activities. However, even if you are caught by bad weather, Cape Town can offer you many interesting places. From the extensive list of attractions, I recommend the following:
Two Oceans Aquarium
This beautiful aquarium is located in the harbor in the city center, within the V&A Waterfront complex. The aquarium houses over 3,000 species of marine creatures. If you hold a diving license, you will have the opportunity to swim in the aquarium with sharks.
Castle of Good Hope
The castle, which was built by the Dutch between 1666 and 1679, is the oldest building in the Republic of South Africa. Currently, the castle serves as the headquarters of the country's army. It houses the Iziko Museums of Cape Town.
District Six Museum
District Six is a memorial to a Cape Town neighbourhood where primarily black residents once lived. In 1901, these residents were forcibly relocated to an area now called Cape Flats, and their homes were razed to the ground.
V&A Waterfront Shopping
The V&A Waterfront is Cape Town's working harbour turned shopping and dining district — over 450 shops, a covered food market, restaurants, the Two Oceans Aquarium, and the ferry to Robben Island all in one walkable precinct. A good rainy-day base!
Wine tasting in Constantia
Constantia, fifteen minutes south of the city centre, is South Africa's oldest wine-producing region — vineyards have been planted here since 1685. Several historic estates, including Groot Constantia and Buitenverwachting, run tastings indoors regardless of weather, paired with cheese, chocolate, or full meals.
Zeitz MOCAA
The Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art sits inside a hollowed-out grain silo at the V&A Waterfront — the silo's original concrete tubes carved into a vast cathedral-like atrium, with nine floors of galleries above. The largest museum of contemporary African art in the world, it shows work from across the continent and the diaspora.
