THE DAY
What to expect

We start with the cable car up Table Mountain, which sits at 1,086 metres above the city. On a clear day you can see two hundred kilometres — across False Bay to Cape Point in one direction, up the West Coast in the other. The summit is a 2km easy, flat walk one way, and we'll take an hour or so to circle the main viewpoints.

Back at sea level, the city tour begins. We pass through Company's Garden — the original vegetable plots that supplied ships rounding the Cape on their way to India — past Parliament, the City Hall, and the Castle of Good Hope, the oldest building in South Africa. Then into Bo-Kaap, with its winding streets and houses painted every colour of the spectrum, still home to the Cape Malay community.

We loop out to the Atlantic Seaboard, past the Green Point Stadium and along the Sea Point promenade. Camps Bay sits below the Twelve Apostles — a perfect lunch stop. From there we climb up to Signal Hill for the panoramic view back over the city.

We finish at the V&A Waterfront, the working harbour turned shopping and dining district. Time for a harbour cruise (often with dolphin and seal sightings, or whales between August and November), a visit to the Two Oceans Aquarium, or simply a drink with a view of the boats coming in.

GOOD TO KNOW
Before you go

  • Table Mountain cable car runs weather-permitting — high winds occasionally close it, in which case we have alternative routes ready (or can swap the day around)
  • The cable car ticket is roughly R950 per person (paid at the lower station)
  • Spring and summer (October to April) are clearest; winter days can be windier but offer dramatic skies
  • The summit is exposed — bring a layer even on warm days
  • Comfortable walking shoes for the summit and the city centre
  • Optional add-ons at the V&A: harbour cruise, Two Oceans Aquarium, Robben Island ferry (the latter needs advance booking)
  • The itinerary can be reshuffled to put Table Mountain in the morning or late afternoon depending on weather and crowds
  • Door-to-door transport from your hotel and Czech-speaking guide included
