Unlike most European cities, it's not the case that the closer the accommodation is to the city center, the better it is. The CBD is busy and quiet at different times of day; the best neighbourhoods to stay in are usually a few minutes' drive out, with mountain or ocean views and easier evenings. Here's where we'd send our own families.

Green Point & Sea Point
Conveniently located close to the center and have a beautiful promenade along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, where you can rent bicycles, play mini-golf, or simply stroll during sunset. They are also close to the V&A Waterfront harbour area and Table Mountain.
Best for first-time visitors
Camps Bay
White sand, the Twelve Apostles behind, and Atlantic sunsets out front. A short drive over the mountain to the city. An ideal place should you wish to stay close to the beach.
Best for beach holiday
City Bowl
Fully equipped apartments with self-catering options are available. In the outskirts of Cape Town, it's possible to rent a house, stay in a B&B, or in small guesthouses with easy beach access or with a pool and garden. Useful if you're staying a week or more.
